One-Third of Asthma PHI Outpatient Cases Are Treated in the ED

In 2017, more than one-third (34.2%) of outpatient asthma cases covered by PHI were treated in the emergency department (ED). On average, this equated to 305.3 such cases per hospital.

That year, 21.2% of outpatient ACS cases covered by PHI were seen in the ED. In all, for eight of the 12 common diagnoses shown, more than 10% of PHI outpatient cases went through EDs in 2017.

1 "All Other Outpatient Cases" includes cases treated in units that provide outpatient medical care by appointment, such as general, obstetric, pediatric, substance abuse, or psychiatric clinics.

NOTE: Hospital discharge data from IQVIA are based on all hospital types and are effective as of 2017. Psychiatric, rehabilitation, armed forces, and long-term acute-care hospitals are included. Similar data in previous digests excluded these hospitals, so figures will differ. Unless otherwise specified, data include cases for primary and secondary diagnoses. ACS is acute coronary syndromes.
